Violin Beetle facts:

The Scientific Name of this cool beetle is Mormolyce Phyllodes. Violin Beetles can reach a total length of 0,6 to 1 cm. These beetles have a flat leaf-shaped, shiny black or brown body with distinctive violin-shaped translucent elytra, so that is why they have this special name. Their characteristic mimicry protects them against predators and their flat shaped body allows them to dwell in soil cracks or under the bark and leaves of trees to hide. They look like a leaf and that is mostly why predators won’t see them. They have very long antennae and their legs are long and slender.

When they defend themselves, they release a poisonous butyric acid. The larvae live between layers of bracket fungi. The development of the larve takes 8–9 months, and pupation lasts 8–10 weeks. Adult Violin Beetles fly from August to November. This species can be found in rainforests of Southeast Asia.
