The Scientific Name of the Jewel beetle is Buprestidae. Jewel Beetles are beautiful little insects in bright glossy iridescent colours. Due to their vibrant colours, people often use them in beetle jewellery and decoration in asian countries. When they are larvae, they generally favour to eat dead branches. Some adult Jewel Beetle therefore love recently burned forests to lay their eggs. They can sense pine wood smoke from up to 50 miles away and can see infrared light, helping them to get closer to the forest fire.
Jewel beetles are among the largest families of beetles and over 15,500 species have been identified! Jewel beetles can range in length from 3 to 80 mm, although the majority of the species are under 20 mm. Their bodies are oval-shaped, flat, and they have a pair of serrate antennae protruding from the head. Most jewel beetles are active during the day and spend the night nestled under leaves and other plant material. Jewel beetles are herbivores and subsist on a diet of leaves, nectar, stems, roots, and other kinds of plants including trees and grasses.
