Birdwing Butterfly facts:

The Scientific Name of the Birdwing Butterfly is Genus Ornithoptera. It comes from the Latin words for bird (ornithos) and wing (pteron). There are about 30 different species of birdwings ranging from the mainland of Asia through the Indonesian islands and New Guinea as far as Queensland and the Solomons.

For now we take one of the species to tell you more about; the Queen Alexandra’s Birdwing. This is the largest species of butterfly in the world, with females reaching wingspans of 25 cm to 28 cm (9.8 inches to 11 inches)! This birdwing only lives in the forests of the Oro Province in eastern Papua New Guinea. The greatest current danger to the endangered Birdwing Butterfly is commercial logging, the expanding oil palm industry and smallholder development in the Popondetta region, although cocoa and rubber plantations still occur. These activities claim large tracts of forest which are the habitat for Ornithoptera alexandra.

Together with our small butterflies collection you can make a room full of butterflies.
