Blue Mountain Butterfly facts:
The Scientific Name of the Mountain Butterfly is Papilio Ulysses. The Papilio Ulysses, also commonly known as the Blue Emperor, is a large swallowtail butterfly found in Australia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. Named after the Greek hero from the epic Odyssey, the Ulysses butterfly usually has a wingspan of about 14 cm. The blue wings have a great shiny reflection, which you can see from afar. The upper sides of the wings have an iridescent electric blue color; the underside of the wings is colored with black and brown. The colors come from the microscopic structure of tiny scales, a phenomenon called structural coloration.
The female differs from the male in that she has small blue sickles on the back, on the upper parts of her hind wings. The males are only black there. Males are strongly attracted to the color blue because they like to mate with the females. That sometimes means flying at all the blue objects that look like females. As larvae, the butterflies mainly eat kerosene wood and a variety of citrus fruits. As adults, they feed on the blossoms of the rose flowered doughwood. That is a tree with clusters of small pink flowers emerging from the branches.
