Colibri facts:

Colibri or Hummingbirds get their name because of the humming sound they create by their beating wings. In fact, their wings can reach a high speed which vary from around 12 beats per second in the largest species, to 80 in some of the smallest! Their top speed is 54 km per hour. Colibris have tongues that are grooved like the shape of a “W” with tiny hairs on it to help them lap up nectar, like cats. A Colibri is also special because it can fly backwards. This way the Colibri is quick and very convenient when flying. When a Colibri is still a baby it can not fly, therefore the mother needs to take care of them in the nest and feed them a lot of nectar. Only when they can fly they leave the nest.

The Scientific Name is Trochilidae. They become 10 centimeters in height. They weigh mostly from 3 to 4 grammes! Their average life span in the wild is 3 to 5 years.
